Introduction:
I have been a fan of Anime ever since I watched shows like Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon as a kid.
As I like the Anime aesthetic in general this then eventually led me to start watching Vtubers. This has then over time even slipped into my music preferences with more and more Vtuber covers and originals creeping it's way into my previously Metal and Rock dominated playlists.
Just a little before the debut of the first Hololive English generation in mid 2020 was when I became aware of the world of Hololive (and Vtubers in general). It all started after I saw the name "Hololive" pop up more and more as the source of the characters on the artworks that showed up on my various feeds, I eventually decided to look-up what this "Hololive" thing was.
Expand to show me gushing over my favourites and why...
What I found was a group of amazing (at the time mainly Japanese) talents that live streamed using an Anime styled realtime "mocap" tracked avatar instead of a normal facecam (and an overall generally pleasant fandom surrouding it). This put me on the edge of what in the fandom is called "the rabbit hole", what pulled me in fully was the debut of the first generation of English speaking talents.
I do enjoy some non Hololive Vtubers (a.o. Henya the Genius, Dokibird , Kizuna AI and Kson for example), but my main focus is on the talents within Hololive production.
It is amazing how Cover / Hololive managed to get such a large group of streamers that are all entertaining and multitalented. A large draw for me personally is the musical content they bring out, ranging from karaoke streams, professional covers, original bangers to full CD's and 3D live concerts. Of cource this also includes whatever weird shit Haachama is up to. Another is how they work amazingly off each other in collaborations and feel like a tight "family" group together. This especially can be seen when one of the famous duo's or named sub groups collaborate (おかころてぇてぇ. SMOK is love, SMOK is life).
And while I have my personal favourites (obligatory YAGOOo7 YAGOO best girl), all of them are really close in talent and entertainment factor. Most of the the talents are good at multiple things in the following incomprehensive list: Gaming, Drawing, Singing, Dancing, Comedy Sketches, Video Editing and just being funny and entertaining in general. Within HoloPro there are Female and Male English branches, Female and Male Japanese branches and a Indonesian branch. Every talent has their personal style that varies enough for there to be atleast one of them that will align with your personal preferences (if you are willing to give them a chance), while also all being so high in entertainment value that you can enjoy all of them if you are into these kind of things.
My personal favourites are Nekomata Okayu (love her voice and her singing), Ookami Mio (her singing is in the absolute top of Hololive for me), Ninomae Ina'nis (Ina's streams are just so ridiculously comfy and her art is sublime). But like I said, all of the others are not far behind ぺこ.
Collapse gushing...
Down the rabbit hole:
For watching the live streams I advise using the Holodex website instead of Youtube for a much better viewing experience (at least on PC). One of the many benefits of Holodex is a build in Translater filter, if you do not care for the other benefits of Holodex then you can also get a stand alone LiveTL app / extension that filters messages from translaters in the chat for streams not in your language.
A large part of the (western) fandom can be found at the official hololive production subreddit.
